Why it is special

Amphorae were the workhorse containers of the ancient world — two-handled jars that carried wine, oil and grain across the Mediterranean for millennia — and coastlines like Alanya's sat on busy shipping lanes. Wherever ships worked, some cargo ended on the bottom. What you see is not a museum display: some shapes are unmistakably jars, others fragments half-claimed by the sea and softened by marine growth.

The residents

Broken pottery and rocky seabed make perfect hiding places. Octopus den in the jars — a ready-made apartment with hard walls and a narrow door — grouper patrol the rocks, and moray eels peer from the dark holes. All three are often seen here. None is guaranteed.

Who can dive it

The site lies at an accessible depth, so it can be part of a beginner's second dive within the 13 m ceiling as well as a certified diver's profile. As everywhere, the crew decides on the day whether it is the day's site.

What a dive here looks like

The boat anchors over the site and the descent is over rock and sand rather than open blue, which suits nervous divers: there is always something to look at and the bottom arrives quickly. The guide leads a slow route over the scatter of pottery, stopping where a jar is intact enough to read its shape and where a resident is at home — an octopus watching from a rim, a grouper hanging in mid-water with that unmistakable grumpy-uncle expression. Beginners hover with the instructor beside them; certified divers follow the guide's plan at the depth their card allows.

Move slowly and breathe calmly. Fast fins empty a reef in seconds; a relaxed diver is the one the octopus stays out for. Photographs are welcome, contact with the pottery is not, and nothing — ever — comes up with us.

Heritage rules

• Look, never touch: underwater heritage is protected and every fragment belongs where it lies.
• Control your buoyancy so fins and hands never make contact.
• Take photographs, take nothing else. Pocketing even a shard is illegal and destructive.
