The reefs off Cleopatra Beach

The site

The reef lies in the waters off Cleopatra Beach, on the seaward side of the castle peninsula, a short cruise from Alanya harbour. Underwater it is tumbled limestone: boulders, short walls, cracked ledges and sandy patches between them, with cave mouths and overhangs opening in the pale rock. Visibility on this coast is generally good, and the light on a bright day is the reef's best feature.

Marine life

Bream and wrasse move over the rock in the open; moray eels tuck into crevices with only the head showing; octopus den in the holes and grouper hold territory around the boulders. Sea turtles pass through on some days. Often seen, never promised.

For beginners

This is where a first dive happens: a gentle 5–8 m first, then to about 13 m along the reef beside the instructor, in open water, with the cave mouths seen from the outside. It is shallow enough for daylight to colour everything and interesting enough that nobody looks at their watch.

For certified divers

The same reef continues down, and certified divers dive the deeper profile — around 30 m on standard dives — along the ledges and overhangs, with swim-throughs where training and the guide's plan allow.

How a dive here is planned

The instructor or guide picks the exact spot on the reef for the group: a sheltered, sandy-bottomed corner at 5–8 m for a beginner's first breaths, the boulder field within 13 m for the second dive, the deeper ledges for a certified profile. Current is generally light, but the sea decides: on a day with swell from the wrong direction the boat moves to the sheltered side of the peninsula, and on a day when the sea says no, the dive is moved to another date free of charge.

Between the dives the boat sits over the site — snorkelling from the ladder is part of the day for those who want it, and the castle walls above the water are the view from the deck.
