Step one
Discover Scuba Diving: the first step
A supervised experience dive with no theory exam and no certification — the way almost every diver on earth started. On our boat it is the beginner dive.
Who it is for
Anyone aged 14 or over who has never dived, holds no certification and wants to find out what breathing underwater feels like — couples, friends, families, solo travellers. It is also the right choice for a certified diver who has not dived for many years and would rather have an instructor beside them for the first dive back.
Requirements
- Minimum age 14.
- Honest answers about your health — no diving in pregnancy or with heart or serious respiratory conditions.
- Comfort in the water; you need not be a strong swimmer.
- No alcohol before, no flight within 24 hours after.
What happens
The day is described step by step on the diving day page. In short: equipment fitted on the boat, a briefing covering breathing, equalising and signals, a first dive of 5–8 m for 15–25 minutes beside your instructor, a rest, and a second dive to about 13 m along the reef. The instructor controls your buoyancy and depth throughout.
Theory and training
There is no exam. The briefing is the theory: enough to breathe, equalise, signal and enjoy the dive. Skills are practised where they are used — in the water, beside the instructor — rather than in a pool or classroom.
Certification and international recognition
A try-dive issues no certification. What it gives you is the experience and, if you want to go on, a clear picture of what the Open Water course would involve. Under both PADI and CMAS standards a try-dive is an experience programme, not a qualification.
Safety requirements
Supervision by a professional instructor throughout, 3–4 divers per instructor, open water only, within the 13 m ceiling. The full picture is on the safety page.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Discover Scuba Diving the same as the beginner dive?
On our boat, yes. Discover Scuba Diving is the agencies' name for a supervised try-dive; our beginner dive is that experience, with 2 dives instead of one.
Does it count towards a certification?
It gives you experience, not credit. Some agencies let an instructor credit a try-dive towards the first open-water training dive of a course; ask when you plan a course.
