Specialty courses

Each specialty is a short course — usually one to three days — that trains a single kind of diving to a recognised standard. The agencies publish the requirements for each; the ones most relevant to a Mediterranean coast like this one are:

• Deep Diver — planning and executing dives to 40 metres: gas management, narcosis awareness, safety stops and emergency procedures at depth. The deep sites on this coast to 60 m are dived only by suitably qualified divers.
• Enriched Air (Nitrox) — diving with oxygen-enriched air for longer no-decompression times; a theory course with analysis and planning skills.
• Underwater Navigation — compass and natural navigation, distance estimation, search patterns.
• Night Diver — the skills and equipment for diving after dark. Not offered here; listed for completeness.
• Wreck Diver — surveying and, at the higher level, penetrating wrecks. This coast's wrecks lie off Kemer and Antalya, not Alanya.
• Peak Performance Buoyancy, Drift, Photography and others.

Master Scuba Diver

PADI's highest non-professional rating: Rescue Diver plus five specialties and a minimum number of logged dives. It is a recognition, not a course.

Professional development

The Divemaster (and the CMAS Three Star Diver and guide levels) is the first professional rating: leading certified divers, assisting instructors, managing groups in the water. Instructor training follows for those who want to teach. Both require a substantial number of logged dives, a rescue certification and current first aid.
